The most honest answer: quality porcelain veneers placed correctly on well-prepared teeth last 15 to 25 years. Some of Dr. Tarek's earliest veneer cases from the 1990s are still intact and aesthetically excellent today.

But "porcelain veneer" is a broad category. The difference between a veneer that fails at year 3 and one that thrives at year 20 comes down to three variables: material quality, preparation technique, and patient behaviour.

Material: Not All Porcelain Is Equal

Feldspathic Porcelain (Traditional)

• The original veneer material, used since the 1980s
• Exceptional translucency — mimics natural enamel light behaviour beautifully
• Relatively fragile (flexural strength: ~60–80 MPa)
• Requires exceptional technician skill to fabricate and bond
• Best for: patients with minimal bite forces and impeccable oral hygiene
• Expected lifespan with correct placement: 15–20 years

e.max (Lithium Disilicate)

• The current gold standard for veneers at The Dental Factory
• Significantly stronger (flexural strength: ~400 MPa)
• Still achieves excellent translucency and aesthetics
• More forgiving during the bonding process
• Best for: most patients — combines aesthetics with durability
• Expected lifespan: 15–25 years

Zirconia

• Exceptional strength (flexural strength: 800–1200 MPa)
• Less translucent — better suited for posterior (back) teeth
• Not generally the first choice for cosmetic anterior veneers
• Best for: heavily bruxing patients who need maximum protection

Preparation: The Step That Determines Everything

Veneer preparation is irreversible. The enamel removed to create space for the veneer does not grow back. This is why preparation quality is paramount.

Over-preparation (removing too much enamel) exposes dentine, reduces bond strength, and increases post-operative sensitivity. Under-preparation leaves insufficient space for the veneer, forcing the laboratory to bulk up the restoration, resulting in an artificial, opaque appearance.

What Causes Veneer Failure?

• Bruxism (grinding) — the single most common cause of premature veneer fracture. A custom night guard is non-negotiable for bruxers.
• Nail biting and pen chewing — direct trauma to incisal edges
• Biting hard objects — ice, fingernails, bottle caps — veneers are not designed for these loads
• Poor oral hygiene — receding gums expose veneer margins over time
• Dental neglect — cavities at the veneer margins can undermine the bond

The Maintenance Protocol

To achieve maximum lifespan from your veneers:

• Professional cleaning every 6 months
• Custom night guard if any grinding is present
• Soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste
• Avoid staining agents (excessive coffee, red wine, turmeric) in the first month post-placement
• Annual review with photographs to monitor margins

Are Veneers Worth It?

When placed correctly on the right patient using quality materials, porcelain veneers are one of dentistry's most reliable and aesthetically satisfying restorations. The investment per year of service, when calculated across a 20-year lifespan, is modest.
