Full Mouth Rehabilitation: The Complete Patient Guide

What Is Full Mouth Rehabilitation?

Full mouth rehabilitation — also called full mouth reconstruction — is a comprehensive, coordinated treatment plan that restores the health, function, and aesthetics of every tooth in your mouth simultaneously.

Unlike a single crown or a single implant, full mouth rehabilitation treats the mouth as an integrated system. Bite forces, jaw alignment, gum health, bone density, and aesthetics are all addressed together, in sequence, by a single coordinating dentist who sees the full picture.

Who Needs Full Mouth Rehabilitation?

Patients who benefit most typically present with one or more of the following:

  • Severe erosion from acid reflux (GORD), bulimia, or excessive acidic diet
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease that has caused bone loss and tooth mobility
  • Multiple failed restorations — old crowns, bridges, or fillings that have broken down
  • Trauma — accidents that fractured or displaced multiple teeth
  • Congenital conditions — developmental disorders affecting enamel or tooth formation
  • Severe bruxism (grinding) that has worn teeth to stubs over decades
  • Full arch tooth loss requiring implant-supported reconstruction

The common thread is that the problems are systemic, not isolated. Treating one tooth at a time would be like painting individual bricks on a crumbling wall.

The Rehabilitation Process: Step by Step

Phase 1: Comprehensive Assessment (Week 1)

The journey begins with a complete diagnostic workup:

  • Full oral examination and periodontal charting
  • Digital full-arch photographs
  • CBCT 3D scan of jaw and bone structure
  • Digital bite analysis (occlusal assessment)
  • Digital Smile Design mock-up (for aesthetic cases)

This phase produces a master treatment plan: a document that maps every planned procedure, in sequence, with timelines and milestones.

Phase 2: Foundation Work (Weeks 2–8)

Before any cosmetic or restorative work, the mouth must be biologically healthy:

  • Periodontal therapy — deep cleaning, gum disease treatment, possibly minor surgical intervention
  • Extractions — removing teeth that cannot be saved
  • Implant placement — titanium posts placed where teeth are absent or will be extracted
  • Bone grafting — where bone volume is insufficient for implants
  • Provisional restorations — temporary crowns or bridges that protect and preview the final result

Phase 3: Healing and Integration (Months 2–4)

Osseointegration — the fusion of implants with bone — takes 8–16 weeks. During this period, patients wear their provisional restorations and provide feedback on function, comfort, and aesthetics. Adjustments are made to the provisionals before any final restorations are fabricated.

Phase 4: Final Restorations (Months 4–6)

Once healing is confirmed and the provisional design is approved:

  • Final impressions (digital or conventional) are taken
  • Restorations are fabricated in specialist dental laboratories (zirconia, e.max, or porcelain-fused-to-zirconia)
  • Try-in sessions ensure perfect fit, colour, and function
  • Final placement with permanent cement

Phase 5: Maintenance

A full mouth rehabilitation is an investment. It requires:

  • Professional cleaning every 3–6 months
  • A custom night guard if bruxism is a factor
  • Annual radiographic review
  • Ongoing home care protocol

Timeline and Visits

Most full mouth rehabilitation cases at The Dental Factory are completed in 3 to 6 months. For international patients, we coordinate treatment phases to minimise trips — typically 2 visits of 10–14 days each, rather than multiple short trips.
